How to Choose the Right Food Safety Training for Your Business

Whether you’re a manager, back-of-house staff, or front-of-house staff, food safety is everyone’s concern. Without safe food handling, serious illnesses and death may occur.

In the U.S. alone, 1 in 6 people get food poisoning every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that is 48 million people annually.

Your business’ reputation relies on delivering a safe product. That’s where food safety certification training comes in. Food safety training can keep your business and your customers safe from serious illnesses.

But not all classes are created equal. Here’s what you should look for when it comes to finding the right food safety training for your business.

The Quality of Food Safety Training

The most important component to look for in a food safety training program is the quality of the education. Everything else should come second. Without quality instructors who know their stuff and are up to date on food safety standards, you’re wasting your time and money on poor education.

Check for a food safety program that has good reputation and is offering an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) accredited exam. There are two things you need to be aware of, one, the course and two, the exam.
It’s possible that your local health department may have a specific requirement that you need to follow. Not every state will accept every course, however, most will accept any ANSI accredited food safety manager exam. It’s really the exam that matters. There are currently six (6) approved ANSI accredited exams.

Flexible Learning

A good food safety training program will offer flexible learning options. In-person classes should be offered at regular intervals and at different times for those with busy schedules.

Online classes should allow you to take the class at your own pace, while still offering quality education. While online learning can present its own challenges, there are ways of making it easier.

Whether you decide to take a class online or in-person, local laws may dictate that the class has a required length. It may last a few hours, all day, or several days.

Affordable Classes

It doesn’t matter how good the safety training is if your organization can’t afford it. Food safety training for employees and managers should be affordable. You should also see if they offer discounts for group or bulk orders.

It’s important to get your food safety certificate as soon as you can. Some states require you to get your certificate within 30 days of employment. Others require it to be done within 60 or 90 days.

But for best practice, you should get it as soon as possible. Certificates aren’t issued until after the exam is completed.
